burned four adjacent buildings including this one. an expedited permit helped make it possible to move back in tonight. >> crews moved quickly to demolish the back half of this building. engineers were worried the structure may collapse. the permit needed to do the work normally takes weeks. with dozens of tenants displaced, the city fast tracked the process even though today was furlough friday. >> doing what was necessary to get the building safe. >> by 4:00 this afternoon, tenants were able to return to the adjacent buildings that were yellow tagged. >> grateful and blessed that we were able to come back to our place. >> this uc berkeley student told us yesterday's ordeal was unsettling. he spent the night at a friend's home and tried to

for top executives. 12 executives made more than $35 million in salary and bonuses. the top executives will be paid $500,000 a year and others will get 10% salary cuts. >> san jose could soon be able to look forward to new jobs and facilities. the city's projecting a $10 million surplus in $800 million operating budget. chuck reed is proposing opening new libraries and the community center. increasing spending on gain prevention programs, completing the parkway project and maintaining funding for school crossing guards and the children's health initiative. >> we have new information tonight on that double homicide on wednesday. fairfield police have now identified these three suspects all of whom are

considered armed and dangerous. they are blake johnson, darren. they are wanted for the shooting deaths of two men. last night there was another shooting nearby but no one was injured. a jury is deliberating the case of a utah man accused of manslaughter in the deaths of two motor cyclists. 46-year-old john mcdonald of utah is facing two counts of vehicle manslaughter. forced the car into on coming traffic and that car hit the motorcycle head on killing the victims. he says he is not guilty. >> we've been whale watching right near our own san francisco bay tonight. we may not be seeing those whales much longer.

>> reporter: this should be one stop on a long journey for the whales. almost everybody we talked to had heard about the sightings. this evening we went out on the water but like you said there might be some indication the whales are moving on. >> chapter 2 was overhead as our camera caught one whale on the surface just before 3:50. 5:30. if it's the same mother, could be the sign they are back on track heading up the coast. >> they have a long trip. it's 6,000 miles. hopefully the calf is getting bulked up and ready to take the long trip. >> the crew of the red and white fleet had seen the whales as recently as yesterday. >> we would love to see the whale. >> middle school teachers weren't the only ones hoping to

a mystery surrounding a dog fighting for his life. reports on where the dog was found and efforts being taken to save him. >> he has no home. >> it's been on ivy fluids. >> he has no name. >> singed hair. >> and tonight doctors say he has to battle to stay alive. >> also depending on the heat that the dog was exposed to. you can also have thermal injury to the airways which can be a problem and something will certainly be monitoring for. >> it's right here where that dog was found inside this shed or what used to be a shed. when firefighters arrived they saw that black, male pitt bull laying on the ground. >> he was tethered inside the shed that was attached to the apartment building. the shed caught fire around 2:45 this
